Recruiting / Why Participate in a Clinical Trial?

New or “experimental” therapies to treat chronic or recurrent disease are generally inaccessible for several years due to the rigorous testing required by regulatory agencies before a new drug is approved. Often, access to these new therapies is only through participation in a clinical trial. Within a controlled study environment, the safety of the drug is monitored very closely and participants receive quality medical care and regular access to a physician.

In the case of drugs that are marketed, participation in a clinical trial provides access to the drug at no cost to the participant, as well as regular assessments by the study physician and careful monitoring of potential side effects and drug effectiveness.

Acclaim Pharma Research Inc. participates in the research and development of new drugs. It conducts bioavailability trials for newly developed products to know how they are absorbed in the human body. Acclaim also does trials with products that are already sold in Canada and manufactured by several companies to see if they are equivalent. Those are known as generic drugs and are sold at a lower price to consumers than brand name products.

CLINICAL OPERATIONS

Acclaim Pharma Research Inc. conducts bioavailability studies with generic products from pharmaceutical companies. These trials evaluate the rate of absorption and elimination of medications by measuring the amount of drug in the blood. We conduct also bioequivalence studies with dermatological products.

The clinic includes dormitories with a total of 90 beds with separate areas for men and women and a lounge area. The clinic offers wireless internet services. Food is catered by reputable restaurants. A security guard is on duty during overnight stays in the clinic.

The studies are conducted in healthy non-smoking male and female subjects aged 18 and over. All subjects are examined by a physician for eligibility in these studies. Typically, the subjects receive only one capsule or one tablet once per week for two weeks. After taking the drug, blood samples are collected for a period of time that can extend from one or more days. The amount of blood that is drawn generally does not exceed what subjects would give in a blood donation to the Red Cross.

Since subjects are more available on weekends, bioequivalence trials are often conducted during the weekend. For example, the subjects arrive at the clinic on Friday evening and leave on Sunday morning or later, depending on the project, for two consecutive weekends.

The subjects receive a financial remuneration upon completion of the trials for their contribution in these trials.

Acclaim Pharma Research Inc. also conducts clinical trials with topical products. These trials generally do not involve taking blood samples.
